Winter solstice, Burning of the Clocks – The Cosmos

Same Sky Community Arts has been burning art on Brighton Beach celebrating the winter solstice for 26 years. This year with theme The Cosmos. As one of a crew of around 40 of the town’s veteran event producers and crew we prepped the beach and town centre in gale conditions, then jockeyed a lit lantern parade through town to the beach.

1500 or so paraders with accompanying percussion danced the route & gave up their rocket, star & alien lanterns to be burned along with a big fiery sun. Just in time the heavy rain stopped, winds dropping from 45mph to under 20 allowing fire and pyrotechnics to go ahead. To the obvious delight of 15,000 spectators.

Cleaning up the beach the following day all that remained was a few kilos of steel rod and a cosmic beach pebble/melted aluminium meteorite, the rest tucked away in memories.
