Ice Wars

Chamonix-Mont-Blanc’s under 22 ice hockey players won against Grenoble at home tonight in a gripping semi-final, seeing them through to the final in St Gervais next week.  The game see-sawed back and forth as the visitors scored the first goal,  Chamonix equalising in the last minute to take the game into extra time. That didn’t lack in thrills and spills either. Chamonix’s sin bin filled early after a stick tripped a Grenoble player into the barrier – the remaining players battling to keep play even until reinforcements arrived.

With 2 teams of wired yout’ blatting around the rink and into each other, there’s going to be some front-ups. One took both officials to keep the players apart and it’s remarkable there wasn’t more aggro. In any case, the visitors scored about halfway through extra time, despite Chamonix defending hard against Grenoble’s aggressive offense.

Once again the home team pulled it back in the last minute. A brilliant powerplay manoeuvre put the puck in Grenoble’s net triggering a  massed Chamoniard jump-up and a place in the league semi-final next week.

In the dressing room later, team coach & ex-Chamonix player Allan Boisson got a rousing big-up. Coaching the town’s junior & under 22 teams for three years, he’s taken them steadily up the rankings. Amongst a din of bashed lockers & air ducts, his colleague Tito had to do a moonie – fending swinging hockey sticks away from his butt. I’m leaving Tuesday & will miss the rest of the season. Pah..
